    • URKUND

The University of Canberra has available, through LearnOnline (Moodle), text-matching software that helps students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understandings of academic integrity. Known as URKUND, the software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals.

In order to check your assignment your lecturer needs to enable this option for the assignment. Once this is done you will be able to upload your file/document as draft by choosing "Add submission".

Then choose "Add" to upload your document, then save changes.

What happens next and how to interpret the report?

After you have added and saved your work/document, the draft will be sent to Urkund to be analysed and you will receive a report via email (usually, your university email)

Once you have uploaded your draft or submitted your final version (Note that once you have clicked on "Submit assignment" you will no longer be able to edit your paper) it can take at least 24 hours for the URKUND analysis to appear. You'll see whether the analysis is in progress (an image of cogs), whether it failed (triangle) and, when the analysis is complete, a traffic light system together with a % score. Click on the % score and you will be taken to the analysis of your document.

In addition you can choose to "Opt-out": meaning the document won’t be accessible in URKUND to other subscribers apart from UC

This is what you will see when you choose to "opt-out":

IMPORTANT: Typically an analysis will fail if the lecturer hasn't entered an account email into the URKUND settings for the assignment or if your document is saved under a format that is not supported by Urkund. (URKUND support the following file formats: .doc, .docx, .sxw, .ppt, .pptx, .pdf, .txt, .rtf, .html, .htm, .wps, .odt)

Once a draft/document has been uploaded there are then 2 main scenarios:

      1) If you need to modify/change the first draft/document you can choose “Edit submission”. This will allow you to delete and replace the draft/document.

      2) If you are happy with the Urkund analysis of the first draft/document you can choose “Submit assignment” to submit the document as a final submission.

IMPORTANT: Note that once an assignment is submitted, no changes are possible unless a lecturer allows re-submissions.
