If you’re wondering what Mahara or an ePortfolio is or why you might want one and what it can do for you, then read on – you’re about to find out.

At the simplest level, Mahara is two things: an ePortfolio and a social networking system combined. An ePortfolio is a system in which students can record “evidence of lifelong learning” – such as essays, artwork or other such things they produce that can be stored digitally. Such things are known as artefacts in Mahara. Social networking systems need little introduction – think  ,  or  . Social networking sites such as these provide a way for people to interact with their friends and create their own online communities.

Mahara is much more than just a place to store files. Mahara also includes blogging, a résumé builder, and Moodle integration.

Mahara is both your space and a learning space.

It is a personal learning environment, a tool you can use to showcase your work - whether that be from university, societies, volunteer positions, work place, etc. You can create groups for societies and manage members, create connections with friends, and share pages with friends.

Mahara may also be used by your unit and/or course for the purposes of teaching and learning. Many units and/or courses at UC now ask students to create portfolios of evidence of their learning, which may be from projects, placements, or other activities.

We hope you enjoy using Mahara and the benefits it affords.
